When looking for toys in Olympia, chances are you’ll Wind Up Here
It is virtually impossible to walk into Wind Up Here without feeling the corners of your mouth curl up into a smile. The Downtown Olympia toy store has a knack for turning even grown men and women into playful, adventurous children. I’ve visited Wind Up Here with my daughter on many occasions and, without fail, I always end up tinkering with something. And with over 4,000 square feet, there is plenty of room for everyone to tinker.
Established in 1993 by a group of 4 friends, Wind Up Here has sought to bring joy to Downtown Olympia through educational toys and an engaging lineup of children’s events. That vision and energy is what attracted current owners, Brekke Hewitt and Gail Small to purchase the business in March 2007. The mother-daughter partners had just opened their first toy store, Dragon’s Toy Box in Seattle’s Pike Place Market, two years earlier. They soon decided to expand and began searching for new opportunities. When they found that Wind Up Here was for sale in Olympia they decided to take a look. “It was just a perfect fit. We came down and met the owners and met the staff and it was love at first sight,” says Hewitt.
We focus on gathering a great selection of toys that promote creativity, interaction, cognitive thinking and positive play. Wind Up Here brings you toys from companies that are conscientious of the environmental and social health of both our community and the entire globe.
What’s not to love? As a parent, it is refreshing to find a toy store that places education as their top priority. But that doesn’t mean the toys aren’t fun too. “There is so much that is educational to children through their process of play and learning that wouldn’t seem educational to a grown-up,” says Hewitt. The toys featured at Wind Up Here are not the typical selection of toys you might find at some of the bigger toy stores. Instead, recognizing both the responsibility and opportunity that comes with selling products designed for children, they select toys that promote creativity, interaction, cognitive thinking, and positive play.
Its not just about selling toys either. The folks at Wind Up Here have a strong sense of community and they provide a fun, safe place for kids and parents to come hang out. “We have 2 game nights a month, we participate in First Friday, we’re always part of Arts Walk, we do different Play Day series during the summers, and when someone local comes to us and says they want to come play with the kids and do a show of some sort we almost always can make that possible,” Hewitt says.
