Capital High Alum to Write & Perform Official U.S.C. Commencement Song
Olympia native and Capital High School alum Derik Nelson was recently commissioned by the University of Southern California to write and perform an original song articulating the feelings and experiences of graduating seniors. The results? Pure magic.
Nelson’s song “Take Chances” is a beautiful theme song sure to be on repeat on the iPods of U.S.C. students. The U.S.C. home page even dubbed the song “an instant U.S.C. tradition”.
I haven’t had a chance to talk to Derik yet, but I think he is enjoying this moment fully. On his Twitter page yesterday he tweeted: “FREAKING OUT!!! I’M ON THE USC HOME PAGE!!!” While the instant fame has humbled him, I have a feeling the spotlight won’t be leaving Nelson anytime soon.
His song is getting some serious mileage through social media and is even being picked up by national media outlets like the Washington Post.
When the buzz wears off, maybe we can convince Derik to put his musical genius back to work writing a song about his hometown. But for now, enjoy his performance of “Take Chances”
